Self Portrait on a Snowy Day

Day 365

Yes, it is snowing... we will be having a White New Years after all! Melting.. hmm maybe March or April!

Its a snowy day, time to shovel driveways, make snow angels, snow shoeing, go sliding, skiing, & snow boarding! I can do the first 3 thank you!!

Self Portrait ~ Snowy Day

Taking a self portrait is all about finding the right stump/fence photo assistant. In my case it was a tree and stump. I wedged my phone in between... then started the timer on my phone! Make sure you use the 10 seconds.. gives you time to dash and not slip or fall to your spot! Then pose and smile!!

When I was editing the above photo, I added a bit more green in the trees..it helped make my white jacket pop out more!

B & W Self Portrait on a Snowy Day

I like this photo because it shows off my favorite floating stump! I added more snow falling in the editing process.

Enjoy today's photo challenge!!

I will see  you again, one last time this year!

Cold

 Day 364

There are only a few more days until the end of 2020 and also the end of my 366 photo challenge: 2020 Vision.

I thought I would take a walk at Cottonwood Island Park. The temperature at the river was -8c a little bit of a nip in the air.

The first photo is taken along the river, near a walk way over a pond. I have taken photos of this area before, especially at different times of the year.

Here is a before photo: As is, straight from the camera to the computer.

After photo: Edited in Light Room.

Cold ~ Edited

After taking a few photos from this location, I crossed the foot bridge and found a couple of Red Headed Wood Peckers. They were a little spooked by some dogs walking their owners, that the birds kept moving. I had to be fast at taking photographs of the Wood Peckers... there was not much time to adjust camera settings.

Enjoy!

Until tomorrow

Snow

Day 363

We received a couple of inches of snow, just enough snow to cover the grass, the dirty snow piles and add some snow frosting on the evergreen trees.

The scene is starting to look like a Christmas Card... a few days late ... esp. if you are wanting a "White Christmas".

Since I am thinking ahead... a year ahead!! I thought I would take a couple of photos so that I could use them next year to create my own Christmas Card!

Yes, I am planning ahead... ideas never stops, brain never rests!

A possible Christmas Card for 2021!

A possible Christmas Card for 2021!

It was fun trying to prop these two snow birds on this branch with out knocking off the snow!

I am sure I will be taking more photographs between December 2020 and December 2021 that I can use as "The" Christmas Card!

Thank you for taking a peek at today's photo!

Wine Time Photo Fun

 Day 362

My mini me photographer, Ms T. Legobricson  she was out exploring the day after Boxing Day. Ms.Legobricson stumbled upon Peddeville; a quiet Christmas Village, located far far into Thow County!

This Village was very unique, quiet, beautiful. She enjoyed wondering around taking many photographs. The people didn't object or make any comments about a stranger in their quiet town. Happy with her photos, she then decided to stop and relax with a glass of Chianti and Cheese at the Tuscan Carafe.

As my own 2020 Vision, 366 Photo Challenge is soon coming to an end. A few people have asked what am I going to do for 2021?! Will my challenge continue??

I have thought about continuing my challenge, but, instead of publishing daily.. doing a weekly blog with my photos of that weeks photos.

If anyone has any suggestions, ideas, I would love to hear about them.

I will let you know New Years Eve!

Boxing Day Humor

 Day 361

Mysterious Monoliths continue to popup across the country and around the world. In such places as Utah, California, Romania, Netherlands, England, Pennsylvania, Las Vegas!

The Mysterious Monolith showed up in the Christmas Village of Peddeville in Thow County late Christmas Day!!

The villagers were shocked and silent, they had no comments to this photographer.

Just as quickly and quietly this Monolith appeared, it vanished with no evidence of ever being in the Village Square!

The Night Before Christmas

 Day 359

As I am preparing for our Christmas Eve Feast, and doing some prep for tomorrow's Christmas Dinner, I have holiday music playing in the background.

One of the Songs that touches my heart is "I'll be Home for Christmas".

When I sing that song in my head, I think about Home, the home I have now with Robert.

I also remember and reflect on Home, when my children were young, excited and waiting for Santa to arrive. All sparkling clean from their baths, reading "The Night Before Christmas Story", putting out Egg Nog, carrots and cookies for Santa and the reindeer.

And then a misty foggy memory emerges, of Christmas with my brothers and our parents, Christmas records playing, and us kids laying under the Christmas Tree dreaming of what Santa would bring, while eating the delicious Christmas Cookies our mom baked.

The Night Before Christmas

I'll be home for Christmas, you can count on me,

I'll be home for Christmas, if only in my dreams.

 Enjoy your Christmas Eve!

I will see you all tomorrow... yes, I will be posting a photo for Christmas.. you can count on me!!

Two Days before Christmas

 Day 358

 Two  Nights Before Christmas

It's two nights before Christmas and all through the house,

Everything is silent  and there is no mouse,

Robert is snoozing and so is the cat .

I am up and wide awake

making sure all my Christmas prep done,

the wrapping, the baking, the knitting,

it has been fun!

When I started to settle for my long winter nap,

I jumped up and realize,

My parcel I sent from Alberta, it has not materialized.

Its been traveling for 23 days,

where oh where can it be!

Am I in a foggy haze?

With COVID and Canada Post,

I am not surprised!

I sat on the phone listening to some dull music score,

After 40 minutes or more

no news, no brown paper package

 tied up with string,

We may need to wait to open this parcel hopefully by the spring.

I sat in in my jam-jams,

I realized to my dismay

Our Christmas tree is missing some of its light display.

Some lights had died, and Now!  I am fit to be tied!

Instead of watching a Hallmark Christmas movie, or reading

my Horoscope predictions,

 instead,

I am reading the Provincial COVID restrictions,

I am a bit concerned about the Gesundheit Gestapo,

Bah hum bug I said,

I will not stop O!

I will carry out our Christmas Traditions

They'll be food, drink and Video Chats

I am sure Santa will arrive complete with his red hat.

I do know  people have more serious problems than me

Sometimes I'm too narrow sighted to see...

Specifically to make a fuss over a tree.

I am truly blessed, I am Healthy and I am fine

I know in my heart I am loved and that is we

are only apart,

We will keep Christmas in our hearts,

So good night everyone

Just remember to be cheerful, happy, and kind.

They are even great with home made Raspberrycello Jam to enjoy with that first cup of coffee and home made Baileys!

Christmas Food Photography

 Day 356

A wreath is an assortment of flowers, leaves, fruits, twigs or a various materials that is constructed to form a ring. Typically during the Christmas Season you would see Advent and Christmas wreaths as decorations. Wreaths made from evergreens symbolize strength, as evergreens last even throughout harsh winters.

Oh Christmas Tree

 Day 353

There has always been a debate about whether to put up a Real Tree at Christmas, or a store bought tree. There are great joys, stories, fun, sawing and cutting when you head out to get a real tree. Even when the tree is a little lacking in spots.. you add some lights, your treasured Christmas Ornaments and you have real beauty standing in your house.

I think once my dad had to go back and cut another tree... because the one he cut didn't pass our mom's critical eye!

Oh Christmas Tree

Day 349

This morning was a feel good morning.  I was greeted by a Masked Stranger who helped me find a grocery cart to carry my parcel. This Masked Stranger even saved a spot in line for me while I went back to my vehicle to get the parcels that needed to be mailed before the Christmas parcel shipping deadline approaches.

This Masked Stranger did a very simple act of kindness which put a smile on my own hidden masked face!

Maybe some of those people wearing Masks are like Zorro, The Lone Ranger.... super hero's behind a mask! What a concept.... What if we, while wearing a mask, do a simple act of kindness, open a door, lift a parcel, say good morning, Merry Christmas? What other no dollar value acts of kindness could be do while wearing a Mask?

Oh Christmas Tree

After mailing out my parcels, I went for a walk at Cottonwood Island Park. I found this tree partially decorated with Christmas Ornaments and Candy Canes! This put another smile on my face!

And because it has been so long since I was at this park... I just had to feed the birds!

Lunch time!

I hope today's photographs and blog makes you smile and feel good about today!

Traditional Christmas Beverage

 Day 348

While planning this years Christmas baking, Christmas Eve dinner, Christmas Day menu, we also are considering the beverages we would serve our guests, (if we could have guests) or just to sip while relaxing and enjoying the Christmas music and the Christmas Lights.

I think Eggnog is on the top of the list of traditional beverages to the Wassil Bowl which is a warm holiday punch filled with aromatic spices, Hot Buttered Rum, Hot Toddy, Mulled Wine!

There are so many ways to celebrate Christmas with friends and family (pre- covid), you can choose brandy, rum, wine, beer, sherry. You can can raise your glass to your family and friends with your favorite drink, what ever it may be.

For the past few years it has been my tradition to make and share My Mamma Julie's Homemade Bailey's/creme coffee liquor.

Mamma Julie's Baileys ~ Rye Whiskey

The great thing about making/baking in the kitchen, is that it is so much fun creating something tasty and delicious with a dear friend. The laughter, the taste testing, the sampling! Oh and believe me, so far, this is the best batch! It will taste so good, alone over ice, or added to coffee!!

Cheers, Proust to my family and friends!

Traditions #2

Day 347

During the Christmas Season, there are all sorts of Traditions. Traditions we learned as children. Some traditions we created on our own or adapted as we grew older and esp. when we had our own children.

As a fairly new couple Robert has started his own tradition.

Each day before Christmas I find a small token to be opened. Each item means something to Robert and to myself.

On the 12th Day Before Christmas my true love gave to me....

I am thinking that he shows his love with flowers and that he thinks that I am as lovely as a bouquet of flowers.

They are truly beautiful and grace our table so wonderfully! Thank you Robert! xx

I will take a photo of the other items I may receive and post at the end of the blog instead of a quote!

Until tomorrow

Ornaments/Traditions .. A story

 Day 346

(I am not a writer.... )

There once was this family, a father, mother, a daughter, a son and a baby boy who lived in a country far far from here.

The mother and her 2 older children sat at her feet while she was knitting. She was telling her children stories of Christmases from the past. The girl was cradling her hand stitched doll, while her brother listened to every word his mother spoke. As her knitting needles were clicking away she asked her daughter and her son what was their wish for Christmas.

The little girl asked for dancing slippers, because she wanted to be a famous dancer on a stage. She would also love a doll, not a home made one, but a real one like in the window of the toy store. The mother then asked her son what he would like. He asked his mother if he could wish for anything? She said, yes, anything, anything at all.

The boy thought, and smiled, " I would like a star. "

The mother looked at her son and asked him if that is all he wanted was a star. He said," Yes, just a star please."

The mother knew that her son read everything about everything. She often would chase him back to his bed, because he would sit in the dark staring at the stars from his window if he wasn't reading under the blankets.

As the days were quickly approaching Christmas, there was so many things to prepare. If the mother wasn't scrubbing and cleaning, then she was baking, cooking, sewing and knitting.

Again the mother asked her daughter what she would like for Christmas. The girl's answer was the same. She asked her son, he said that his little brother Herbert would like a wooden toy train to push around. The mother smiled and asked what he would like. The boy smiled and said," you know, you remember, I would like a star."

Now the mother was worried, what was she going to do. She already found her son a book for Christmas. But a Star? She had unpicked a cardigan sweater and made the children hats and mittens to wear in the bitter cold winter months. She made the boy trousers from on of her long woolen skirts and dresses for her daughter from an gown she hardly had worn. A star? A star? Is what this busy mother kept saying to herself.

Then she had an idea!

She went to the Stationers and for a few pennies bought some paper. She used her husband's razor blades and a ruler. When everyone went to bed... the mother went to work!

The mother did this every night, until one evening, her husband came out of their bedroom and notice his wife wrapping her fingers with a bandage. He asked her what had happened. She explained what she was doing. He kissed her fore head and sat down to help her with this special project.

Christmas Eve had arrived, the Christmas tree was up in the sitting room with the door shut!  No one was allowed to enter but the mom! She kept going in and out of the room. Their mom was very good at keeping secrets!

While the family was getting dressed for the Christmas Eve service at the church. The little girl asked her parents if they could take a peek at the Christmas tree.

The father shrugged his shoulders, and the mom asked the children if they would sing their very best, listen to the pastor, and go right to bed when they were told? They both jumped up and down and said Yes!

Their father told them to close their eyes, while the children did that, the mother slowly opened the sitting room door!

The little girl gasped! And she twirled her way to the tree... the boy, just stared and stared! He looked at his mother and said, "that his wish had come true!"

On this Christmas tree was stars, so many stars! Stars from the top to the bottom of the tree! Beautiful white stars made from paper!

"Is this what you had wanted for Christmas is a star?" The mother asked her son as she stroked his head.

"Yes," he whispered. He kept looking at this amazing Christmas tree. The mother asked why did he wish for a star. His answer was he wanted just one star to make one wish and that wish was that everyone would get their wish for Christmas.

"What is your wish for Christmas?" asked the son's father. The boy answered while studying a star dangling from a pine branch. "I would like to see the stars on the other side of the world. Places like the Statue of Liberty, The Rocky Mountains, The Pacific Ocean."

"Momma" asked the girl, "Will you teach us how to make these stars?" "Yes Please", smiled the boy.

And the mother did.

Christmas Tree Star on my Tree

The world changed for this family. The mom in the story went and had 3  more children. They were living in Poland at the time and when World War 2 started, this family hurried back to Germany.

The boy in the story is our dad. He did get to see The Statue of Liberty, The Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. He was also an avid reader, a great story teller, and went on to become the mayor of Greenwood,BC.

As for the stars, I do know they were on my Grandmothers Christmas tree and our dad was taught how to make these Christmas Stars. Not sure of the real story behind The Christmas Tree Stars got started in my grandmother's family.

As children we sat round our parents coffee table making many Christmas Tree Stars. This tradition is now being done by my children and one day, my grand children.

Christmas in the Mall

Day 345

Christmas in the Mall use to be filled with shoppers of all ages, there was also music every where. From the 'mall music' to carolers, school children singing in choirs. The shops were all decorated for the Christmas shoppers and a beautiful tall Christmas tree at the Mall's front entrance.

The crowning glory in the centre of the mall was Santa and the display! Children from 1 to 92 would admire the mall decorations, lining up take photos with Santa, and people taking selfies in front of the Mall Christmas tree!

Christmas in the Mall

You can hear the mall music, but, the Christmas Spirit is not there.  It is truly something you can not purchase from the store.

I will not let Covid-19 crush my Christmas Spirit. I will continue to bake, wrap, knit, sew, decorate, cook, toast the season with our homemade Raspberrycello's Bailey's, and send out gifts to my loved one. I will continue to do the things that will keep Christmas in my heart!

Until Tomorrow!

Something Red

 Day 343

During the Christmas season, you see a lot of bright colours, such as red, green, gold, silver, white and blue.

Today's photo challenge is Something Red. I found that I was having some difficulty photographing my Something Red.

I have lots of Red Christmas Ornaments, but my issue was these red snowman mittens I had made and trying to adjust the settings on my camera so the red mittens looked red like the actual mittens themselves.

So, instead of giving up and finding a different challenge.... I took my challenge outside.

Then in Light Room I muted the photograph to give it a Vintage feel! What do you think?

Let's see if tomorrow's challenge is Something Green! I may have an easier time!!
