There are a number of traditions associated with this extra day during the leap year. According to an old Irish legend, or possibly history, St Brigid struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose marriage to men every four years. In some European countries today is known as “Bachelor’s day”. Those males that refuse a proposal of marriage must pay a penalty (12 pairs of gloves or a gown). In Scotland it was just consider an unlucky day, similar to the traditions surrounding Friday the 13th. All this in the name of balance.
